The following states have specific filing requirements. Please note, the following information is not all-inclusive for UCC filings and is intended only to assist in filing preparation. Please contact our office if additional assistance is needed.



General Rules

1) The type of organization, jurisdiction of organization, and organizational ID # are required on all UCC-1’s. If there is no corporate id #, the word none must be written in the box.

2) The initial financing statement date must be on line 1a. of a UCC-3.

State Specific Rules

    Arizona
  • UCC’s filed prior to 7/1/01 are active for 6 years. UCC’s filed after 7/1/01 are active for 5 years.
  • The state will not accept filings if the secured party name includes the wording “FKA” or “successor by merger.”


  • California
  • The state only allows one type of collateral change to be checked on line #8 of a UCC-3.
  • The state will not accept a UCC-3 if the debtor’s address is on line 6a.


  • Florida
  • “Not Subject to Documentary Stamp Tax” must be written on all UCC-1’s.


  • Illinois
  • All information referring to the debtor and secured party must be typewritten in all capital letters and 12 pt. Times New Roman Font.


  • Iowa
  • The state only allows one type of collateral change to be checked on line #8 of a UCC-3.


  • Maryland
  • “Not Subject to Recordation Tax” must be written on all filings.


  • Massachusetts
  • The state does not accept n/a on line 1g. of a UCC-1 or on line 7g. of a UCC-3; Instead write “None.”
  • When amending the debtor or secured party address, the debtor or secured party name must appear on line 6a and 7a.


  • Michigan
  • When amending the debtor or secured party name, the debtor or secured party address must appear on line 7c.


  • Montana
  • Signatures are required on terminations.
  • All filings must be typewritten and in 10 pt. Font.
  • The debtor and secured party names must be on all UCC-3 filings.


  • New York
  • There should be no address on line 7c of a UCC-3 unless it is an address change or a debtor/secured party name change.


  • North Dakota
  • The debtor’s Federal Tax ID # or Social Security # is required on all UCC-1’s.


  • Rhode Island
  • The state will not accept a UCC-3 if the debtor’s address is on line 6a next to the debtor name.


  • South Dakota
  • The debtor’s Federal Tax ID # or Social Security # is required on all UCC-1’s.


  • Tennessee
  • “Maximum Principal Indebtedness for Tennessee Recording Tax Purpose is $___” must be written on all UCC-1’s.


  • Washington
  • The state will not accept filings with hand written information.


  • Wisconsin
  • On a UCC-3, if line 7a is filled-in, line 7c must also be filled-in.


  • Wyoming
  • The state will not accept any filings with collateral description more than 300 characters without a diskette. Therefore, if the diskette is not submitted, the filing will be rejected.
